A1-Level Communicative Material Design for Teaching the Arabic Dialects Spoken in Hatay

Mustafa Ağbaht & Mehmet Hakkı Suçin

Abstract

This study seeks to meet the need for teaching materials for the sedentary Arabic dialects of Hatay, which are transmitted only orally and whose transmission between generations is steadily weakening. For these dialects, which have neither a written standard nor any teaching materials, an A1-level communicative course entitled Lehcitna (“Our Dialect”) has been developed.

The design of the material adopts the communicative approach, which views learners as “social agents”: the aim is for learners not only to learn the language but to produce it actively in sociocultural contexts and use it as a means of communication. Themes and content were selected on the basis of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and principles of teaching-material design and preparation were taken into account.

Document analysis was used to draw on scholarly studies and texts concerning the dialects in question. The study also draws attention to the situation of the sedentary Arabic dialects of Hatay from the perspective of language maintenance: the lack of written materials and the weakening of intergenerational transmission are identified as major risks to their survival.

Within this framework, the material is intended to offer systematic A1-level learning to people who wish to learn the sedentary Arabic dialects of Hatay, or who understand but cannot speak them; to use the Arabic script as the main writing system, with transcription as a supporting aid; and to contribute to the preservation of this linguistic and cultural heritage.
