Abstract
This paper discusses the current state of Arabic translation education at university level in Turkey and the role of Turkish–Arabic/Arabic–Turkish literary translation workshops in training professional translators. The first part offers a comparative examination of translation education in Arabic Language and Literature, Arabic Language Teaching, and Arabic Translation and Interpreting programmes, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of their curricula in terms of translation courses and professional training.
It notes that in Arabic Language and Literature programmes translation is mostly taught as an extension of language and literature teaching, while Arabic Language Teaching programmes focus essentially on training teachers. Arabic Translation and Interpreting programmes, by contrast, are geared directly towards the translation profession, yet differ considerably from one another in the range of courses, practical training, specialization and graduate education. The curricula of Okan, Kırıkkale and Istanbul 29 Mayıs universities are compared course by course.
The second part turns to the Turkish–Arabic/Arabic–Turkish literary translation workshops held since 2006. The paper stresses that these workshops bring professional translators together with emerging literary translators, offering first-hand experience of literary translation practice and opportunities for discussion, critique and collective evaluation of texts. It also highlights their role in building a sustainable exchange and a professional community in literary translation between Turkey and the Arab world.
In its overall assessment, the paper argues that although Arabic teaching in Turkey rests on a quantitatively strong institutional base, translation education needs to be developed in terms of methodology, practice and specialization. It draws particular attention to the need, especially in translation and interpreting programmes, to balance translation theory and practice, to give more room to specialized translation, to strengthen the professional translation experience of academic staff, and to develop graduate translation education.
