Published in 2011 by the Board of Education of Türkiye’s Ministry of National Education, the Primary Education Arabic Curriculum was designed to teach Arabic as a means of communication in grades 4 to 8. Mehmet Hakkı Suçin chaired the committee that prepared it.
The curriculum takes the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as its benchmark and rests on a communicative, action-oriented approach. Rather than grammar rules, it foregrounds language use, developing listening, speaking, reading and writing within a learner-centred, spiral structure, while taking into account what teaching a foreign language to children requires.
Planned for a total of 648 class hours—three hours a week in grades 4 and 5 and four hours a week in grades 6 to 8—the curriculum aims to bring pupils to the basic-user level (A2) by the end of grade 8. Learning outcomes are set out grade by grade across sub-levels from A1.1 to A2.2, together with themes and content suggestions, guidance on the teaching process, error-correction strategies and assessment tools.
Committee: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Hakkı Suçin (chair), Asst. Prof. Dr. Erdinç Doğru, Res. Asst. Ayşe Hümeyra Kütükçü, Zeynep Oktay, Leman Yerli, Ahmet Aytaç, Mehmet Ülger, Melek Karadağ, Mevlüt Kaşıkçı, Mehtap Erman.
